Mom finally checked into the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) around 6pm today after anxiously awaiting all day to hear back from the hospital. The hospital beds are currently in high demand, so we had to wait for a room to become available. She is currently in a private room on the 8th floor of the hospital with a nice view of Husky Stadium and the surrounding area.
Today is known as Day -7 since it is 7 days away from when she is scheduled to receive the transplant stem cell infusion. Day 0 is the day of transplant and any subsequent days are numbered with a plus sign., i.e. +2 equals 2 days after transplant.
We had a brief tour of the hospital floor area, went over applicable procedures and rules and unpacked her belongings. Mom was able to have salmon for dinner delivered to her room while sitting through the 4 hours of hydration infusion required before beginning treatment. She also had a chest x-ray to act as a baseline for future treatment. At midnight she will start the carmustine infusion that will take approximately 3 hours. She is then scheduled for 4 days of etoposide and cytarabine infused twice daily. This will be followed by melphalan infusion the next day, followed by a day of rest and then the transplant stem cells will be infused over the next two days.
That's the plan for now. We'll keep you updated on how things are going.
