Transplant - Day 0 - Big Day

Mom received the first round of stem cell infusions today. The stem cells are frozen until needed, so they were brought to her room frozen, thawed in a warm water bath and then immediately infused into Moms central line. The process is somewhat anti-climatic, as it is very similar to a blood transfusion.

There is a preservative that is added to the stem cells that some people do not tolerate very well. This was the case with Mom, as she got sick a few times during the infusion due to the nausea. The infusion took around 30 minutes or so. After the infusion was over she began to feel better. She was able to eat fairly well for dinner, which was an improvement over earlier in the day.

Tomorrow is the second and final round of stem cell infusions. We're hoping that things go a little better tomorrow; Mom is anxious to get the day out of the way. After tomorrow, she will technically be done with the actual "transplant" phase of the stem cell transplant.

Depending on how things go, there is the possibility that Mom may be discharged from the hospital tomorrow. We will have to wait and see how things go.
